"Dans les couloirs de l’hôtel, je le rencontrai qui se promenait avec un petit animal mange-serrure. Il posait le petit animal sur son coude, alors l’animal était content et mangeait la serrure.

Puis il allait plus loin et l’animal était content et une autre serrure était mangée. Et ainsi de plusieurs et ainsi de quantité. L’homme se promenait comme quelqu’un dont le "chez soi" est devenu considérable. Dès qu’il poussait une porte une nouvelle vie commençait pour lui.

Mais le petit animal était si affamé de serrures que son maître devait bientôt ressortir à la recherche d’autres effractions, si bien qu’il trouvait peu de repos.

Je ne voulus pas faire alliance avec cet homme, je lui dis que moi ce que je préférais dans la vie, était de sortir. Il eut un grand regard blanc. Nous n’étions pas du même bord, voilà tout, sans quoi j’aurais fait alliance avec lui. Il me plaisait sans me convenir."
